Septic Systems & How They Work

A septic system acts much like a sewage treatment and disposal facility but on a smaller scale on your private property.  A septic system has  three main parts: the septic tank itself, the drainfield and the soil under it.  A septic system should be effective at accepting and treating liquid wastes from your home.  A septic system's overall purpose is to prevent contaminants from getting into the groundwater and leaching into nearby wells, lakes and streams.

Q. How Often Should You Have Your Septic Tank Pumped?
A. There is no "one size fits all" but this chart on the right is close.

* "Tank pumping frequency will depend upon the number of people in the home; whether occupancy is year round or seasonal; and the size of the septic tank. All these factors determine the rate of sludge and scum accumulation in the tank. NOTE: If you own an alternative system with pumps and other mechanical or electrical components, an annual inspection is recommended. Growing numbers of homeowners having these more complex systems have established maintenance contracts with specialists to help ensure proper operation."  Call Smart Septic & Plumbing Solutions to arrange maintenance of your septic system.

There Could Be Monsters In Your Septic Tank!

What could be living in your Septic tank? After an urgent call, we met with a couple at 2 in the morning.  Their septic system was backing up.  We were able to give them temporary relief for the night.  When we returned to further investigate this is what we found growing inside!  It's what we call root intrusion.  It can happen anywhere there is a source of water or moisture.  In most cases we are able to jet the lines before a problem gets this bad, otherwise lines may need to be replaced.

Preventive maintenance could have kept this from happening.

Most Septic System Clogs Are Preventable!

Regular maintenance and proper care of your septic system are the best methods of assuring septic system clogs and backups don't happen.  Ask about our regular Septic System Maintenance Plan to keep your system running correctly.
